Dues payment: If you cannot get into the SWI International Web site's online directory it is
because you have forgotten to pay your dues. Ryan Murphy, former United Airlines F/A, teacher of U.S. history & Politics, Doctoral Student-Department of American Studies, at University of Minnesota:
Prior to pursuit of my PhD, I was an SFO-based flight attendant for United Airlines, and was a base representative for our union, the Association of Flight Attendants. After being repeatedly furloughed in the wake of 9/11, I left United to pursue advanced study of the crisis facing airline workers in the U.S. and across the globe. My current project focuses on flight attendant activism in response to the post-deregulation airline industry restructuring. I am looking at the way that independent unions, especially IFFA at TWA, brought new forms of activism to the industry. I will follow this activism from 1970s demands for independent unions, through the strike and struggle with Carl Icahn in the 1980s, and finally to extreme hardship faced by TWA flight attendants after the American Airlines takeover. I will look at both the economic and political problems facing flight attendants, and their own innovative ways of coping with and challenging these difficulties.
I would be interested in interviewing anyone who was a flight attendant for TWA, and especially those who have done any kind of union or labor activism during or after their days on the line. Such activism could include leadership roles in IFFA, participation in the 1970, 1973, or 1986 strikes, or advocacy for TWA flight attendants' right to seniority at American Airlines, among many others. These interviews will support my doctoral dissertation which I hope will eventually be a full-length book.
I will not be formally beginning research until February 1st, 2008, but would be interested in making contact with people as soon as possible.
